Mercy Vision South Africa
An estimated 400,000 South Africans are blind. According to the Fred Hollows Foundation approximately 240,000 of these are blind from cataracts. The rate of cataract surgeries in South Africa falls far below the United Nations Vision 2020 goal of 2,500 per million population.

The number of cataract sugeries needing to be performed is increasing each year among the 36 million poor people in South Africa. Sadly, children often become obligated to care fulltime for blind family members, thus seriously affecting their prospects for formal education. Learn more

Reconstructive Surgery (Outlook of Hope)
Project Goal: To reduce the effects of neglected trauma, disease, and congenital conditions by providing specialised surgical treatment.

For objectives, timeline and other project details, please contact us.

Ophthalmic Surgery (Mercy Vision)
Project Goal: To reduce the prevalence of blindness/low vision due to cataract and pterygium, and to build capacity of the local eye care system to achieve 16% of the Vision 2020 goal of 20,740 cataract operations per year.

For objectives, timeline and other project details, please contact us.

Obstetric Fistula Surgery (VVF)
Fistula is one of the most devastating of all pregnancy-related disabilities that affect poor women. Usually the result of obstructed labour coupled with a lack of skilled medical care, obstetric fistula most often leads to permanent incontinence - a continuous leakage of urine and loss of control over bowel movements. Affected women are often abandoned by their husbands and ostracised by their families and communities.
Project Goal: Mercy Ships aims to reduce the effects of fistula in women in West Africa by providing specialised medical treatment and training onboard the Africa Mercy.

For objectives, timeline and other project details, please contact us.

Orthopaedic Surgery
Project Goal: To reduce the effects of neglected trauma and congenital conditions by providing specialised orthopaedic surgical treatment.

For objectives, timeline and other project details, please contact us.

Dental
Project Goal: To reduce the incidence of dental disease by providing dental education and treatments, such as restorations, extractions, and cleaning.

Water and Sanitation
Water and Sanitation is critical to good health.
While addressing the need for increased access to health care, Mercy Ships partners with government and non-government agencies to improve local capacity for health care services delivery.  Training and surgical services are supplemented with strategic infrastructure development – including improved water and sanitation services.  While specific funding proposals do not address water and sanitation services, these services are still integral to many infrastructure development projects.  Designated giving for water and sanitation will contribute to these projects.

Restoring Hope to Survivors (Mental Illness & Trauma).

Church Leaders Conferences
Project Goal: Increase cooperation between local churches in focused holistic programs that will provide sustained transformational development in the cities and communities of our host nation.
